The Hunger Games 6

"'No, Peeta, I don't even want to discuss it,' I say, placing my fingers on his lips to quiet him.

'But I --' he insists.

Impulsively, I lean forward and kiss him, stopping his words. This is probably overdue anyway since he's right, we are supposed to be madly in love. It's the first time I've ever kissed a boy, which should make some sort of impression I guess, but all I can register is how unnaturally hot his lips are from the fever. I break away and pull the edge of the sleeping bag around him. 'You're not going to die. I forbid it. All right?'

'All right,' he whispers.

I step out in the cool evening air just as the parachute floats down from the sky. My fingers quickly undo the tie, hoping for some real medicine to treat Peeta's leg. Instead I find a pot of hot brother.

Haymitch couldn't be sending me a clearer message. One kiss equals one pot of broth. I can almost hear his snarl. 'You're supposed to be in love, sweetheart. The boy's dying. Give me something I can work with!'

And he's right. If I want to keep Peeta alive, I've got to give the audience something more to care about. Star-crossed lovers desperate to get home together. Two hearts beating as one. Romance." (Collins 268-269)

This shows how much power the media (that's controlled by the Capital) has over your survival in the arena. If you stick to what the audience wants, you'll get more sponsors. The more sponsors you have, the more supplies that you really need and cant find, you'll get. It's not just strength and skill. You have to play up to your story too. Like this star-crossed lovers thing Katniss and Peeta are playing up.

The whole romance thing is frustrating! Katniss thinks that Peeta's just playing along because that's what Haymitch wanted, but he really is in love with her! I feel so bad for him. I just wanna smack Katniss and be like THIS IS NOT AN ACT. HE LOVES YOU, WHAT ARE YOU DOING. In the end, when she goes back to how it was before, he's going to be heartbroken because he really does love her and she's gonna say it was just win, because she hates showing her feelings.

Katniss believes that she is manipulating everyone in the Capitol's thoughts by playing up this star-crossed lovers deal. Even though I think she is in love with Peeta. Either way, she does get sponsors to get the medicine Peeta needs for his leg, so it works!

The Hunger Games 5

"But I told Rue I'd be there. For both of us. And somehow that seems even more important than the vow I gave Prim.

I really think I stand a chance of doing it now. Winning. It's not just having the arrows or outsmarting the Careers a few times, although those things help. Something happened when I was holding Rue's hand, watching the life drain out of her. Now I am determined to avenge her, to make her loss unforgettable, and I can only do that by winning and thereby making myself unforgettable.

I overcook the birds hoping someone will show up to shoot, but no one does. Maybe the other tributes are out there beating one another senseless. Which would be fine. Ever since the bloodbath, I've been featured on screens more than I care.

Eventually, I wrap up my food and go back to the stream to replenish my water and gather some. But the heaviness from the morning drapes back over em and even though it's only early evening, I climb a tree and settle in for the night. My brain begins to replay the events from yesterday. I keep seeing Rue speared, my arrow piercing the boy's neck. I don't know why I should even care about the boy.

Then I realize...he was my first kill.

Along with other statistics they report to help people place their bets, every tribute has a list of kills. I guess technically I'd get credited for Glimmer and the girl from District 4, too, for dumping that nest on them. But the boy from District 1 was the first person I knew would die because of my actions. Numerous animals have lost their lives at my hands, but only one human. I hear Gale saying, 'How different can it be, really?'

Amazingly similar in the execution. A bow pulled, an arrow shot. Entirely different in the aftermath. I killed a boy whose name I don't even know. Somewhere his family is weeping for him. His friends call for my blood. Maybe he had a girlfriend who really believe he would come back...

But then I think of Rue's still body and I'm able to banish the boy from my mind. At least, for now." (Collins_242-243)

Being surrounded by death everyday, makes Katniss and the other tributes immune to emotions when it comes to killing. It's survival of the fittest and this point. Katniss now feels the need to avenge Rue's death. The point of this passage is to emphasize how long it took Katniss to purposely kill someone.

It's funny how much of reflex it was for Katniss to shoot the District 1 boy after he killed Rue. I think it was because Katniss saw her younger sister, Prim, in Rue. So when she saw the 12 year old get hurt, her motherly instincts kicked in. (Especially since she took care of her sister for so long) But it's funny how she didn't even hesitate and be like "this is the first person I'm going to kill" it was just like she was hunting and she needed to protect her partner.

The Hunger Games 4

"I hear his instructions in my head. 'Just clear out, put as much distance as you can between yourselves and the others, and find a source of water.'

But it's tempting, when I see the bounty waiting there before me. And I know that if I don't get it, someone else will. That the Career tributes who survive the bloodbath will divide up most of these life-sustaining spoils. Something catches my eye. There, resting on a mound of blanket rolls, is a silver sheath of arrows and a boy, already strung, just waiting to be engaged. That's mine, I think. It's meant for me.

I'm fast. I can sprint faster than any of the girls in our school although a couple can beat me in distance races. But this forty-yard length, this is what I am built for. I know I can get it, I know I can get it, I know I can reach it first, but then the question is how quickly can I get out of there? By the time I've scrambled up the packs and grabbed the weapons, others will have reacher the horn, and one or two I might be able to pick off, but say there's a dozen, at that close range, they could take me down with spears and the clubs. Or their own powerful fists.

Still, I don't be the only target. Im betting many of the other tributes would pass up a smaller girl even one who scored an eleven in training, to take out their more fierce adversaries.

Haymitch has never seen me run. maybe if he had he'd tell me to go for it. Get the weapon. Since thats the very weapon that might be salvation. And I only see one bow in that whole pile. I know the minute must be almost up and will have to decide what my strategy will be and I find myself positioning my feet to run, not away into the surrounding forests by toward the pile, toward the bow. When suddenly I notice Peeta, he's about five tributes to my right, quite a fair distance, still I can tell he;'s looking at me and I think he might be shaking his head. But the sun's in my eyes, and while I'm puzzling over it the gong rings out.

And I've missed it! I've missed me chance! Because those extra couple of seconds I've lost by not being ready are enough to change my mind about going in. My feet shuffle for a moment, confused at the direction my brain wants to take and then I lunge forward, scoop up the sheet of plastic and a loaf of bread. The picking are so small and I'm so angry with Peeta for distracting me that I sprint in twenty yards to retrieve a bright orange backpack that could hold anything because I cant stand leaving with virtually nothing.

A boy, I think from District 9, reaches the pack at the same time I do and for a brief time we grapple for it and then he coughs, splattering my face with blood. I stagger back, repulsed by the warm, sticky spray. Then the boy slips to the ground. Thats when I see the knife in his back. Already other tributes have reached the Cornucopia and are spreading out to attack. Yes, the girl from District 2, ten yards away, running toward me, one hand clutching a half-dozen knives. I've seen her throw in training. She never misses. And I'm her next target.

All the general fear I've been feeling condescend into an immediate fear of this girl, this predator who might kill me in seconds. Adrenaline shoots through me and I sling the pack over one shoulder and run full-speed for the woods. I can hear the blade whistling toward me and reflexively hike the pack up to protect my head. The blade lodges in the pack. Both straps on my shoulders now, I make for the trees. Somehow I know the girl will not pursue me. That she'll be drawn back into the Cornucopia before all the good stuff is drawn back into the Cornucopia before all the good stuff is gone. A grin crosses my face. Thanks for the knife. I think.

At the edge of the woods I turn for one instant to survey the field. About a dozen or so tributes are hacking away at one another at the horn. Several lie dead already on the ground. Those who have taken flight are disappearing into the trees or into the void opposite me. I continue running until the woods have hidden me from the other tributes then slow into a steady jog that I think I can maintain for a while. For the next few hours, I alternate between jogging and walking, putting as much distance as I can between myself and my competitors. I lost my bread during the struggle with the boy from District 9 but managed to stuff my plastic in my sleeve so as I walk I fold it neatly and tuck it into a pocket. I also free the knife -- it's a fine one with a long sharp blade, serrated near the handle, which will make it handy for sawing through things -- and slide it into my belt. I don't dare stop to examine the contents of the pack yet. I just keep moving, pausing only to check for pursuers.

I can go a long time. I know that from my days in the woods. But I will need water. That was Haymitch's second instruction, and since I sort of blotched the first, I keep a sharp eye out for any sign of it. No luck." (Collins_149-151)

This is important because this is the official start to the Hunger Games. And it shows how Katniss will rebel if she thinks she can do it, since she rebelled against Haymitch's instructions. She's independent and will do whatever she can to survive.

But personally, if I were her, I would have ran as fast as I could to the woods, of course I wouldn't have gotten a sleeping bag or knife, which are important items for surviving but all of those items were there at the horn just to tempt everyone and force them to kill each other. To really get back at the Capitol, and if I were as good as hunting as Katniss, I would have found other ways to get weapons and slowly pick off each tribute   I could. Like Batman. I'd be like batman. >:D

When it comes to survival, people will go back to animal instinct. We will fight and kill in order to survive. This is a prime example of it. We will do whatever we can, get everything that we might  need, even if we don't know how to use them or what they are. The more items we have, the more we feel we'll survive. It's reassurance.

The Hunger Games 3

"The doors have only just shut behind us when we're engulfed by the prep teams, who are nearly unitelligible as they babble out praise. As I glance around, I notice a lot of the other tributes are shooting us dirty looks, which confirms what Ive suspected, weve literally outshone them all. Then Cinna and Portia are there, helping us down fron the chariot, carefully removing our flaming kind of spray from a canister.

I relize I'm still glued to Peeta and force my stiff fingers to open. We both massage out hands.

'Thanks for keeping hold of me. I was getting a little shaky out there,' says Peeta.

'It didnt show,' I tell him. 'I'm sure no one noticed.'

'I'm sure they didnt notice anything but you. You should wear flames more often,' he says. 'They suit you.' And then hives me a smile that seems so genuinely sweet with just the right touch of shyness that unexpected warmth rushes through me.

A warning bell goes off in my head. Dont be so stupid. Peeta is planning how to kill you, I remind myself.  He is luring you in to make you easy prey. The more likable he is, the more deadly he is.

But because two can play at this game, I stand on tiptoe and kiss his cheek. Right on his bruise." (Collins_72)

These Games make the tributes paranoid about everything. Peeta has helped Katniss before and is being nice to her because he's madly in love with her and always has been, but she thinks he's just planning to kill her. He wants to get on her good side, get to know her, and then kill her using her weaknesses and knowing her strengths. It's sad. Peeta is the baker's son. He isn't a killer or a fighter. At least Katniss has hunted for most of her life. The second she gets put into the Games, she over thinks everything about what he does.

And poor Peeta! this is a terrible situation for him. I feel so bad. He loves her and has to go into these stupid Games. All because of the Capitol and their entertainment. But what Katniss is thinking makes sense, at this point, she thought there could only be one winner, if either one of them won, the other would have to die.

In this passage, Cinna told Katniss and Peeta to hold hands. This simple gesture manipulated everyone in the Capitol's mind. By seeing two tributes holding hands, they would suspect something was going on between the two romantically. This would be a whole new type of drama and excitement in the Hunger Games. By thinking this, people would want the two to live longer to see what they would do, so they could get more sponsors to survive.

The Hunger Games 2

"'Prim!' The strangled cry comes out of my throat, and my muscles begin to move again. 'Prim!' I don't need to shove through the crowd. The other kids make way immediately allowing me a straight path to the stage. I reach her just as she is about to mount the steps. With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me.

'I volunteer!' I gasp. 'I volunteer as tribute!'

There's some confusion on the stage. District 12 hasn't had a volunteer in decades and the protocol has become rusty. The rule is that once a tribute's name has been pilled from the ball, another eligible boy, if a boy's name has been read, or girl, if a girl's name has been read, can step forward to take his or her place. In some districts, in which winning the reaping is such a great honor, people are eager to risk their lives, the volunteering is complicated. But in District 12, where the word tribute is pretty much synonymous with the word corpse, volunteers are all but extinct.

'Lovely!' says Effie Trinket. 'But I believe theres a small matter of introducing the reaping winner and then asking for volunteers, and if one does come forth then we, um...' she trails off, unsure herself.

'What does is matter?' says the mayor...'What does it matter' he repeats gruffly. 'Let her come forward.'

Prim is screaming is screaming hysterically behind me. She's wrapped her skinny arms are me like a vice. 'No, Katniss! No! You can't go!'

'Prim, let go,' I say harshly...

'Well, bravo!' gushes Effie Trinket. 'Thats the spirit of the Games!' She's pleased to finally have district with a little action going on in it. 'What's your name?'

I swallowed hard. 'Katniss Everdeen,' I say.

'I bet my buttons that was your sister. Don't want her to steal all of the glory, do we? Come one, everybody! Lets give a big round of applause to our newest tribute!' trills Effie Trinket.

To the everlasting credit of the people of District 12, not one person claps. Not even the ones holding betting slips, the ones who are usually beyond caring. Possibly because they know me from the Hob, or knew my father, or have encountered Prim, who no one can help loving. So instead of acknowledging applause, I stand there unmoving while they take part in the boldest form of dissent they can manage. Silence. Which says we do not agree. We do not condone. All of this is wrong.

Then something unexpected happens. At least, I don't expect it because I don't think of District 12 as a place that cares about me. But a shift has occurred since I stepped up to take Prim's place, and now it seems I have become someone precious. At first one, then another, then almost every member of the crowd touches the three middle finger on their left hand to their lips and holds it out to me. It is an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means good-bye to someone you love.

Now I am truly in danger of crying,..." (Collins_22-24)

In the wealthier districts, being picked tribute is an honor and what kids are trained for their whole lives. But in districts 11 and 12, it's more like a death sentence. That's why the citizens of District 12 use their gesture of thanks. They are convinced that Katniss wont make it through the Games since it's been so long since a tribute from there has one.

I think it's very brave that Katniss is doing this for her sister. The odds were not in Prim's favor, unfortunately, especially after everything her family's been through. Katniss would not be able to make it through losing Prim if she went into the Games. I would not be able to be as brave as her.

The purpose of this passage is to show how and why Katniss went into the games, and how she's different from all of the other tributes that come from district 12. She's doing it for the person she loves, Prim, her younger sister that she's had to care for ever since her father died.

This shows about the present that there will always be someone that takes family really seriously and will do anything for them, no matter how selfish and careless of other people society is.

The Hunger Games 1

"...He tells of the history of Panem, the country that rose up out of the ashes of a place that was once called North America. He lists the disasters, the droughts, the storms, the fires, the encroaching seas that swallowed up so much of the land, the brutal war for what little sustenance remained. The result was Panem, a shining Capitol ringed by thirteen districts, which brought peace and prosperity to its citizens. Then came the Dark Days, the uprising of the districts against the Capitol. Twelve were defeated, the thirteenth obliterated. The Treaty of Treason gave us the new laws to guarantee peace and, as our yearly reminder that the Dark Days must never be repeated, it gives us the Hunger Games.

The rules of the Hunger Games are simple. In punishment for the uprising, each of the twelve districts must provide one girl and one boy, called tributes, to participate. The twenty-four tributes will be imprisoned in a vast outdoor arena that could hold anything from a burning desert to a frozen wasteland. Over a period of several weeks, the competitors must fight to the death. The last tribute standing wins.

Taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill one another while we watch - this is the Capitol's way of reminding us how totally we are at their mercy. How little chance we would stand of surviving another rebellion. Whatever words they use, the real message is clear. 'Look how we take your children and sacrifice them and there's nothing you can do. If you lift a finger, we will destroy every last once of you. Just as we did in District Thirteen.'" (Collins_18-19)

This passage explains why the Hunger Games were created and how Panem came to be. It explains why people don't stand up to the government that controls everything about their lives. If the government or the Capitol didn't have so much control over everyone, people in district 12 could go to district 1 and try to get better lives for themselves, but they cant. They're stuck mining for coal and being at the bottom of the food chain, basically. Not only that, but parents and family members have to fear that their kin will be picked at a reaping every year and die in the Hunger Games, and they have to watch while it happens!

The people of Panem are in the worst situation ever. I'd hate to live in this society, I'd freak out every time the reaping came about, afraid I'd be picked. And even if it was illegal to train before, I'd still try and make it so I wasn't going to go into the games completely clueless to surviving.

In this story, being human means to do what you were born to do, depending on what district you're in and if you're between the age of 12 and 16, then you can be picked to go into the hunger games, you go. You just do what you're told by the Capitol, or they'll make your life a living hell, basically.

It's kind of like the districts in the movie In Time because you cant really go to different parts of the country in that society either.

World War Z

War
Through a series of oral interviews, Brooks, as an agent of the United Nations Postwar Commission, describes the history of 'World War Z'. Although the origin of the zombie pandemic is unknown, the story begins in China after a zombie bites a young boy. The Chinese government attempts to contain the infection and concocts a crisis involving Taiwan to mask their activities. The infection is spread to other countries by the black market organ trade and by refugees; an outbreak in South Africa finally brings the plague to public attention.
As the infection spreads, only Israel initiates a nationwide quarantine and closes its borders. Pakistan and Iran destroy each other in a nuclear war after Iran attempts to stem the flow of refugees from Pakistan. The United States of America does little to prepare; although special forces teams are used to contain initial outbreaks, a widespread effort never starts as the nation is sapped of political will by several "brushfire wars", and an ineffective and fraudulently marketed vaccine has created a false sense of security. When the world recognizes the true scope of the problem, a period known as the "Great Panic" begins. The United States Army sends a task force to Yonkers, New York, in a high-profile military campaign intended to restore American morale. However, the military relies upon Cold War tactics, weapons intended to disable vehicles, and the wounding or demoralization of human opponents: these have no effect on a force that uses wave attacks, has to be shot in the head to be stopped, and has no fear of death. As a result the soldiers are routed on live television. Other countries suffer similarly disastrous defeats, and human civilization teeters on the brink of collapse.

There was World War I, and II, but this story is about World War Z. It's a virus that people can get that makes them turn into pretty much zombies and start killing people. The world then goes into a panic. And two countries end up blowing each other up in a nuclear war and everyone else is getting turned into or killed by zombies.

It's a different way to look at a zombie apocalypse and it's detailed. Because mostly when a zombie apocalypse occurs, everyone thinks its the zombies causing all of the problems, but in this story, it's countries that are blowing each other up and hurting each other. They start wars between each other blaming the other for whats happening.

Nothing But Flowers by Talking Heads

LYRICS: Here we stand
Like an Adam and an Eve
Waterfalls
The Garden of Eden
Two fools in love
So beautiful and strong
The birds in the trees
Are smiling upon them
From the age of the dinosaurs
Cars have run on gasoline
Where, where have they gone?
Now, it's nothing but flowers

There was a factory
Now there are mountains and rivers
you got it, you got it

We caught a rattlesnake
Now we got something for dinner
we got it, we got it

There was a shopping mall
Now it's all covered with flowers
you've got it, you've got it

If this is paradise
I wish I had a lawnmower
you've got it, you've got it

Years ago
I was an angry young man
I'd pretend
That I was a billboard
Standing tall
By the side of the road
I fell in love
With a beautiful highway
This used to be real estate
Now it's only fields and trees
Where, where is the town
Now, it's nothing but flowers
The highways and cars
Were sacrificed for agriculture
I thought that we'd start over
But I guess I was wrong

Once there were parking lots
Now it's a peaceful oasis
you got it, you got it

This was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies
you got it, you got it

I miss the honky tonks,
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
you got it, you got it

And as things fell apart
Nobody paid much attention
you got it, you got it

I dream of cherry pies,
Candy bars, and chocolate chip cookies
you got it, you got it

We used to microwave
Now we just eat nuts and berries
you got it, you got it

This was a discount store,
Now it's turned into a cornfield
you got it, you got it

Don't leave me stranded here
I can't get used to this lifestyle/td>

There are always stories, movies and games about apocalypses and right after and apocalypse is over. But we never really see years and years after. This song by Talking Heads is about how the world is years after an apocalypse. It describes the world as it is in the beginning, kind of like the world reset it's self. There were cities and buildings, but now it's filled with trees, grass and flowers. This song also talks about how humans will have a hard time dealing with the change from cities to agriculture.

I think it's clever that even though the world went through something catastrophic, later it will be like the Earth starting over, like it couldn't take what was happening to it and just started over.

The person who wrote this song tells of what there used to be and what it is now. "We used to microwave. Now we just eat nuts and berries you got it, you got it." The man speaking in this misses the cities and the way it used to be and doesn't like the agriculture world he lives in now. By saying at the end "Don't leave me stranded here I can't get used to this lifestyle" he doesn't like the environment like it is and likes the technology that we have.

First motion censors to play, now mind controlling?!

Technology

All of these gaming companies are always trying to beat the others. First it was the Wii with motion censor controls. And then Playstation came out with their own version. And recently XBOX came out with the KINECT, where your body is the controller and you are actually in the game.

The only way to one up this installment would be to not even not to get up and out of your seat to play the game, but still be the controller. All you have to do with this new concept for the Wii, all you have to do is think of what to do, and it'll  happen in the game. With technology advancing so quickly now, it could possibly happen.

But the pessimist in me pictures everything that could go wrong with this game. See that headset? That surrounding your head where your brain is. If that thing short circuits and you're wearing it, that could fry your brain. Or it could give you some long term affects. I'm sure someone will find out that it could eventually give you brain cancer. It seems really sketchy to me, cool, but sketchy.

This tells us that humans want to beat each other. XBOX wants to beat out Wii, then Wii wants to beat out XBOX. We're competitive. We'll always try to think of newer and more interesting things to try and have people pay more attention to us than others.

We Need To Change How We're Living, Or Our Great Great Great Great Grandchildren Won't Know What Fresh Air Feels Like.

Environment
'
In WALL-E, the pollution on Earth gets so bad that humans are sent into space on the Axium where robots cater to everything they need while robots on earth clean it all up and fix our past mistakes. But it doesn't work, Earth is too polluted for people to ever live on so the humans stay in space. After many years, the people in the Axium wont even know what Earth is and what it's made of.

It's sad, these people won't know what it's like to go to the park or the beach and sit under the sun on a nice summer day. They're lives are controlled pretty much by robots or a system that is the same thing everyday. And they're all lazy and don't move because they sit on hovering chairs all of the time. It will get to the point that they're so blinded by the technology around them that they wont even notice that there is a pool or a gym on the space station. They'll live and die on this confined space where there is no variety or anything.

The depictions on the future says that we need to do something about our present. We need to stop polluting our world so much. If we keep moving like we are, the world will get so bad that we'll need to find somewhere else to live and survive. This is a possibility to happen if we dont stop contributing to pollution.

Instead of a war between the countries, we'll be fighting against other worlds

War

Now a days, we are at war with our own species. We fight each other, country against country. But with technology enhancing and scientists wanting to know more about the universe, in the future, instead of fighting each other, we'll be fighting other planets and other species.

But will we be ready if another planet does come to fight us? Sure, we have guns and bombs, we know they work against humans, but will they work against aliens? And even if they do come will we band together and fight against them, or still fight against each other for survival? According to this 1953 movie, insanity will ensue and people will push and throw each other out of the way in order to get to safety themselves.

They use newspapers as propaganda to let everyone know what is going on and what they need to do. Putting the words INVASION in big letters at the top sends everyone into a panic. They use these to scare people so they can try and save themselves and find shelter away from the aliens.

Government

LYRICS:
I. Overture (0:00)

And the meek shall inherit the earth...

II. Temples of Syrinx (4:33)

We've taken care of everything
The words you read, the songs you sing
The pictures that give pleasure to your eyes.
It's one for all and all for one
We work together, common sons
Never need to wonder how or why.

We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx
Our great computers fill the hallowed halls.
We are the Priests, of the Temples of Syrinx
All the gifts of life are held within our walls.

Look around at this world we've made
Equality our stock in trade
Come and join the Brotherhood of Man
Oh, what a nice, contented world
Let the banners be unfurled
Hold the Red Star proudly high in hand.

We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx
Our great computers fill the hallowed halls.
We are the Priests, of the Temples of Syrinx
All the gifts of life are held within our walls.

III. Discovery (6:47)

What can this strange device be?
When I touch it, it gives forth a sound
It's got wires that vibrate and give music
What can this thing be that I found?

See how it sings like a sad heart
And joyously screams out its pain
Sounds that build high like a mountain
Or notes that fall gently like rain.

I can't wait to share this new wonder
The people will all see its light
Let them all make their own music
The Priests praise my name on this night.

IV. Presentation (10:16)

I know it's most unusual
To come before you so
But I've found an ancient miracle
I thought that you should know
Listen to my music
And hear what it can do
There's something here as strong as life
I know that it will reach you.

Yes, we know, it's nothing new
It's just a waste of time
We have no need for ancient ways
Our world is doing fine
Another toy will help destroy
The elder race of man
Forget about your silly whim
It doesn't fit the plan.

I can't believe you're saying
These things just can't be true
Our world could use this beauty
Just think what we might do.
Listen to my music
And hear what it can do
There's something here as strong as life
I know that it will reach you.

Don't annoy us further!
We have our work to do.
Just think about the average
What use have they for you?
Another toy will help destroy
The elder race of man
Forget about your silly whim
It doesn't fit the plan!

V. Oracle: The Dream (13:58)

I wandered home though the silent streets
And fell into a fitful sleep
Escape to realms beyond the night
Dream can't you show me the light?

I stand atop a spiral stair
An oracle confronts me there
He leads me on light years away
Through astral nights, galactic days
I see the works of gifted hands
That grace this strange and wondrous land
I see the hand of man arise
With hungry mind and open eyes

They left our planets long ago
The elder race still learn and grow
Their power grows with purpose strong
To claim the home where they belong
Home to tear the Temples down...
Home to change!

VI. Soliloquy (15:58)

The sleep is still in my eyes
The dream is still in my head
I heave a sigh and sadly smile
And lie a while in bed
I wish that it might come to pass
Not fade like all my dreams...

Just think of what my life might be
In a world like I have seen!
I don't think I can carry on
Carry on this cold and empty life

My spirits are low in the depths of despair
My lifeblood...
...spills over...

VII. The Grand Finale (18:19)
Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation
Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation
Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation
We have assumed control
We have assumed control
We have assumed

In 2112 by Rush is a story that's about 20 minutes long and is about a dystopian world that is controlled by the government. It is much like Fahrenheit 451 except instead of books being illegal, but the guitar is being censored from the people by the "Priests" or the government that is controlling the society. Then the main character finds this guitar as a new discovery and presents it to the Priests, thinking it will be a great contribution to the society and it's music. When he does present it to the priests, it calls it an "ancient miracle" but the priests don't like it and think it's a waste of time and will help destroy the human race, calling it a "toy." They tell him to go away and leave the guitar alone. He then has a dream of what man can do with the guitar and the talents they have. The dream haunts this man and he doesn't know what to do and he ends up killing himself.

This is supposed to be a hundred years in the future, so it could happen since auto tune is getting so popular these days. In all of the newest song hits, what's mainly used is a keyboard. Then everything gets edited to sound like something else. After awhile guitars could be taken out of the mix and if the government wants can make them illegal. And since the past repeats itself, someone may find a guitar, see what it can do, think it's some amazing discovery and try and have it make a comeback. Of course, I wouldn't want to be in this kind of world because I love the sound of guitars and would go nuts if I had to listen to music that's edited to the extreme all of the time.

Rush uses a lot of guitar in this song, to emphasize what the guitar contributes to the music. And when the Priests are talking, the music behind them is more harsh. But when it's the man speaking, it's more appealing and nicer to hear. The music for the priests is more like a "listen to us!" but the man's music is innocent.

The Priests were in control of this society. They made everyone think that things are okay as it is. When the man went to them with the guitar they just told him it's nonsense and they don't need it. They used this as their language to tell the man to stop with the guitar.

Censorship doesn't always help.

Government

In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, a dystopian society is banned from reading and owning books.  Instead of fighting fires and putting them out, firemen go to people's houses and burn the books. Since there aren't any books, people spend almost all of their time watching TV on the walls of their parlors. The parlors are the propaganda used to control the humans. The government believes that without books, people aren't getting offended by someone's book, so the simplest thing to do is to get rid of all of them in general. But this harms the intelligence and attention span of others. You can't keep someone's attention for that long, and even if you do, it isnt an interesting conversation.

It's ridiculous. I would not want to live in this society. They arent really happy since at least 10 people try to kill themselves every night, even though they cant remember the next that they tried. The firemen think that they are doing the right thing and it will help people be happier. But they aren't, With people watching the TV 24/7 the media can control everyone in this society. The media controls them.

In this story, humans are kept in control all of the time. Everyone is the same and talk about the same things. To be human in this story is to watching TV and do as the rules say. You cannot question what is happening and you cannot go against the rules.

What The future will look like

Technology
This is a very "Jetsons" feel of what our future could be like. Since there are flying cars and oddly shaped buildings. They aren't box shaped like buildings right now. This is a concept art of what the future will look like.

Technology has definitely evolved from now until this time period. There are flying cars and air traffic. We must have come up with a new way for fuel in order to drive these cars and make them fly. The buildings have places for the cars to fly into. Like the present, there are many buildings and they are very tall.

If you only look at the top half of the picture, it looks like a pretty cool world. Flying cars? We've been striving for that kind of technology for years. Just like in the TV show "The Jetsons" they thought we would have flying cars by 2000. Sadly, that didn't happen. But we still hope it'll happen! And then you look at the bottom half of the picture, on the ground, it looks more dark and depressing. You would think in the future, there wouldn't be rust, or it wouldn't be dirty, but in this picture, the bottom looks dirty and grungy. I mean, by this picture the future looks cool with the flying cars and all, but I wouldn't want want to live in a world that is like this.

This image depicts that because of how we treat the world presently, it can harm the future even if we have technological advances in our transportation. We are so focused on making technological advances on some things, we aren't coming up with solutions for for pollution, so in the future, we may have flying cars, but the world is still filthy.

If Years of Life Were The Equivalent to Money, This Is What Our Society Would Look Like.

Inequality

In Time is a movie about in the future, instead having money, the years of your life are used to pay for things. You start with 25 years, and you make the years you spend. SO, if you're rich, you can live forever. But if you're poor, you have no chance to live very long. It's kind of like now, the rich live easy, while the poor bust their butts to try and get to the level of living.

It isn't fair. You can watch your life literally pass right before your own eyes. You can watch time pass by on your arm. It's not like your death will be a surprise. If you aren't making years like the rich, you know the exact minute and second you will die. It's sickening and scary. If you're born into a poor family, you are screwed. There's no chance because it's not like you can hide the fact that you're poor, people can just see your arm and know, then they'll treat you differently. The rich pretty much rule the society, and they just need everyone else there so they can be considered upper class.

Then, something is made so that you can take years away from people and give them to someone else. And someone who has over a hundred years to live, suddenly runs out of time and then someone who was poor has a whole bunch of years. Then he starts giving years to other poor people. He's the robin hood of our future. Take from the rich and give to the poor. And the government tries to stop him for helping others! It's ridiculous!

A future like this would be very morbid. If it was to be converted right now, my family would definitely not be in the rich category. and I'd have a lot of anxiety since I can seriously see how many years I have left to live. It's really sad. And if you're poor and have kids, and they see you only have a day left and they ask whats going wrong? THAT'S SO SAD. You have to tell your children you're going to die tomorrow, and at like the exact time. It's not like that doesn't happen now, but it would happen more frequently. And even now you dont know if you will die tomorrow. The whole thing is just sad and depressing.

But okay, if the world was like that and Justin Timberlake gave me a few extra years to live? I guess I'd be okay with that. I mean, it's Justin Timberlake, nothing is bad about that at all.

Croatoan zombie monsters

Religion
(Youtube won't let me embed the video here, so this is the link to it: http://youtu.be/huihRfzVTtA)
and here are a couple of pictures:

In episode 4 of season 5 in the CW show “Supernatural,” Dean Winchester is sent 3 years into the future where it’s apocalyptic world. A couple of years before this, Lucifer had been set free from his cage that the archangel Michael had cast him in when he went against God. Now the apocalypse is set on our world. Everything is run down and destroyed. This virus called “Croatoan” has been spread through almost all of the human population. The croatoan virus makes people go crazy and attack each other. It is spread through the blood, so if someone is infected and they cut you, and there blood comes in to contact with the wound, you will have this virus and in a few hours go crazy also. They’re kind of like zombies since they Those who do not have this disease, have to protect themselves. They live in a camp somewhere out of the main cities and always have some type of weapon to protect themselves.

It's scary, if the apocalypse were to happen in my lifetime, I wouldn't survive. My Anxiety would drive me to the point of insanity. You never feel safe, never feel comfortable. If you don't pay attention to your surroundings for even a second, something or someone might attack you and you could die. And it's not like the apocalypse couldn't happen, there's always a certain day that someone says the end of the world will happen. Like Y2K in 2000 when everyone thought the world was going to end. And on 6/6/06 everyone thought that the world was going to end then since it's the number of the devil. Or how it's predicted that on December 21st 2012 the world will end because the Mayan Calendar ends there. And it's not like we're completely sure or not sure it would happen. We cant predict the future.

Hopefully, this doesn't happen. Many places in the world already live in fear for there lives, like in war zones. And, then you can just come to a peace treaty and end it. But the apocalypse? That's irreversible. If the apocalypse were to happen like it did in Supernatural, that means that there's a greater power that's in control of out lives and destinies. Not ourselves. And we have no way to stop it. We aren't supposed to stop it.

Who Needs Chores When The House Does All Of It?

Technology

In the future, if everyone’s houses are like THIS, it will be awesome! You won’t have to do anything at home. The house does it all for you, and it isn’t like a maid or butler or anything, so you wont have to pay it. And since it gets to know you and how you live, it’s not like it programmed standard and you have to deal with it. This house will get to know you and will only do things that you like. I would personally love it. I love elephants, so I’d decorate the house with elephant paintings and statues. And if there is any documentary on elephants on Animal Planet, the house could record it so I never miss it. Oh! And Supernatural is my favorite tv show, so it would record all 7 seasons of the show and the episodes will always be available for me to watch. I don’t know what I’d put on the tap though, probably juice or SUNNY D oh! It would be Sunny D!

I wouldn’t want it to look so…like, sterile, I guess? The walls are stainless steal and there aren’t really a lot of colors in it. The house would have to clean itself too! If my room was a model of what my house would look like, it would be a mess all of the time. And the fact that the house can always see me is really creepy. It’s kind of like Santa Claus but a robot. It sees you all of the time. When I’m in the bathroom? When I’m sleeping? That’s weird. But then again, it will probably have wicked strong security programs since it’s always watching. So if someone tries to break into the house, it would know and have something to stop them and call the police right away. If everyone had a house like this, then house robbers wouldn’t be able to break in and steal things so easily. If houses became smarter than thieves would have to become smarter too, wouldn’t they? Someone would eventually begin thinking of ways to hack the house’s security system.

The technological world is slowly moving towards houses and building like this. For years, we’ve had the “clap on, clap off” light. And there are universal remotes that can control almost all of the technology in your house if you can program it all to it. This house just takes everything to the next level. It’s kind of like the music site called Pandora, except, instead of learning what music you would like, the house learns everything about how you live and changes to your routine and your life. Out of all of the terrible things that are out there that show the future as a negative world, this is definitely an upside. This works and doesn’t turn on you and try to kill you. The worst it can do is spoil your children since the house does all of them already. You would have to find a different way to teach your children responsibility since technology has evolved enough to do it instead of humans.

This clip shows that in the future, humans will not have to do small tasks like turn on lights and record a television show because our homes will be smart enough to do it for us. Does that mean we’re lazier in the future? Or will we be happier and able to do more of other tasks? The smart house shows that scientist have moved father along with technology than we do now. But will the common person use it advance further into the future? Or will it be like Wall-E and in many years, every one will be fat because we don’t walk and use hover chairs? Or like when they invented the computer/internet it was to stop using paper, but now we mostly use it to go on Facebook or play video games. When humans invent new things, we don’t know if it will be better or worse, we don’t know how it will affect the general future?

I guess there won’t be ladies with a billion cats anymore since now they can just talk to their smart house instead of pets if they’re lonely.

In The Future, Being Pretty Makes You Happy.

Genetics

(I’m not sure if I should copy a chapter from the book? It would be a lot to type and I can’t find it online. But I’m focusing on the chapter called “Facing the Future.”)

I think it would be awesome to pick exactly how you looked like, but Tally kind of forces it. Not just Tally, I mean it isn’t her fault; she was basically programmed since she was born to think that she was ugly until she had this surgery. All “uglies” do until it’s time to have the surgery is obsess over what they look like and what they want to look alike. And in our society where all we talk about is how we look, I could see this happening in the future. People already go for plastic surgery, this is plastic surgery taken to the next level, and they are able to fix anything you want. They can change your eye color, your facial structure. Whatever you want done, the doctors can change to your liking, as long as it’s within the laws the government have made.

And once you become a “Pretty” you have no worries! This sounds so awesome, honestly, it’s like the world has given you permission to party and not worry about your life for a certain amount of time before you choose a career and then become an “Oldie”
But then again, the government or “Specials” control your life. And you’re stuck in Ugly town, then you’re stuck in Pretty town, and then you go to where the Oldies live. There are no surprises! I’d get really bored; all new pretties do is party. And I don’t know, I guess I’d get sick of it. I guess I’m more like Shay than Tally in that way.

Westerfield definitely wrote this book to emphasize how dependent we are with our looks and plastic surgery. There are hundreds of people who have plastic surgery done just because they want to look some way. He puts them all living separately. People who haven’t gotten the surgery are in one place, the ones who have in another. Also, the differences between the towns show difference between being pretty and ugly. New Pretty Town has all of the new technology, while Ugly town doesn’t. It shows that if you’re pretty, you get the best things and have more fun. While the uglies just sit and wait for the day they turn 16 and can be pretty too.

This view of the future is an example of what could happen if our society keeps focusing on how someone looks. Beauty does not mean happiness, but in this book, it does. According to this, if you’re ugly, you will not be happy until you have the surgery.
