Technology
In the future, if everyone’s houses are like THIS, it will be awesome! You won’t have to do anything at home. The house does it all for you, and it isn’t like a maid or butler or anything, so you wont have to pay it. And since it gets to know you and how you live, it’s not like it programmed standard and you have to deal with it. This house will get to know you and will only do things that you like. I would personally love it. I love elephants, so I’d decorate the house with elephant paintings and statues. And if there is any documentary on elephants on Animal Planet, the house could record it so I never miss it. Oh! And Supernatural is my favorite tv show, so it would record all 7 seasons of the show and the episodes will always be available for me to watch. I don’t know what I’d put on the tap though, probably juice or SUNNY D oh! It would be Sunny D!
I wouldn’t want it to look so…like, sterile, I guess? The walls are stainless steal and there aren’t really a lot of colors in it. The house would have to clean itself too! If my room was a model of what my house would look like, it would be a mess all of the time. And the fact that the house can always see me is really creepy. It’s kind of like Santa Claus but a robot. It sees you all of the time. When I’m in the bathroom? When I’m sleeping? That’s weird. But then again, it will probably have wicked strong security programs since it’s always watching. So if someone tries to break into the house, it would know and have something to stop them and call the police right away. If everyone had a house like this, then house robbers wouldn’t be able to break in and steal things so easily. If houses became smarter than thieves would have to become smarter too, wouldn’t they? Someone would eventually begin thinking of ways to hack the house’s security system.
The technological world is slowly moving towards houses and building like this. For years, we’ve had the “clap on, clap off” light. And there are universal remotes that can control almost all of the technology in your house if you can program it all to it. This house just takes everything to the next level. It’s kind of like the music site called Pandora, except, instead of learning what music you would like, the house learns everything about how you live and changes to your routine and your life. Out of all of the terrible things that are out there that show the future as a negative world, this is definitely an upside. This works and doesn’t turn on you and try to kill you. The worst it can do is spoil your children since the house does all of them already. You would have to find a different way to teach your children responsibility since technology has evolved enough to do it instead of humans.
This clip shows that in the future, humans will not have to do small tasks like turn on lights and record a television show because our homes will be smart enough to do it for us. Does that mean we’re lazier in the future? Or will we be happier and able to do more of other tasks? The smart house shows that scientist have moved father along with technology than we do now. But will the common person use it advance further into the future? Or will it be like Wall-E and in many years, every one will be fat because we don’t walk and use hover chairs? Or like when they invented the computer/internet it was to stop using paper, but now we mostly use it to go on Facebook or play video games. When humans invent new things, we don’t know if it will be better or worse, we don’t know how it will affect the general future?
I guess there won’t be ladies with a billion cats anymore since now they can just talk to their smart house instead of pets if they’re lonely.

In The Future, Being Pretty Makes You Happy.
Genetics

(I’m not sure if I should copy a chapter from the book? It would be a lot to type and I can’t find it online. But I’m focusing on the chapter called “Facing the Future.”)
I think it would be awesome to pick exactly how you looked like, but Tally kind of forces it. Not just Tally, I mean it isn’t her fault; she was basically programmed since she was born to think that she was ugly until she had this surgery. All “uglies” do until it’s time to have the surgery is obsess over what they look like and what they want to look alike. And in our society where all we talk about is how we look, I could see this happening in the future. People already go for plastic surgery, this is plastic surgery taken to the next level, and they are able to fix anything you want. They can change your eye color, your facial structure. Whatever you want done, the doctors can change to your liking, as long as it’s within the laws the government have made.
Westerfield definitely wrote this book to emphasize how dependent we are with our looks and plastic surgery. There are hundreds of people who have plastic surgery done just because they want to look some way. He puts them all living separately. People who haven’t gotten the surgery are in one place, the ones who have in another. Also, the differences between the towns show difference between being pretty and ugly. New Pretty Town has all of the new technology, while Ugly town doesn’t. It shows that if you’re pretty, you get the best things and have more fun. While the uglies just sit and wait for the day they turn 16 and can be pretty too.
This view of the future is an example of what could happen if our society keeps focusing on how someone looks. Beauty does not mean happiness, but in this book, it does. According to this, if you’re ugly, you will not be happy until you have the surgery.

And once you become a “Pretty” you have no worries! This sounds so awesome, honestly, it’s like the world has given you permission to party and not worry about your life for a certain amount of time before you choose a career and then become an “Oldie”
But then again, the government or “Specials” control your life. And you’re stuck in Ugly town, then you’re stuck in Pretty town, and then you go to where the Oldies live. There are no surprises! I’d get really bored; all new pretties do is party. And I don’t know, I guess I’d get sick of it. I guess I’m more like Shay than Tally in that way.
